Tonight at 6:30, Migrant and Immigrant Rights Advocacy (MIRA) will be hosting a workshop on undocumented students which we at College Dems are cosponsoring. You should all go see it (Spanish pun) if you have the chance. Especially since you can be home in time for the event you guys are really all waiting for which doesn’t start until 8:30. The same group will be showing a film on Wednesday at 7 which is also worth watching (Spanish pun again!). The event is to build support for the DREAM Act, a law that if and when enacted (hopefully as part of comprehensive immigration reform, but potentially on its own) would help legalize undocumented immigrants brought here before their sixteenth birthday if they go to college or join the military and stay out of trouble. Many of these students were brought here as children, and despite their formal citizenship have no other home. Some don’t even speak the language of their so-called homeland. All of them are the type of educated, motivated young people that our country needs to compete in the 21st century. The events this week promise to be great, and it would be wonderful to see many Dems there.
PS: The Daily has an op-ed on the legislation and tonight’s event. Unlike most Daily op-eds, it’s not tool-tastic.
