+ MSA passed a resolution opposing the state House bill that would allow
students to carry concealed weapons on campus. The resolution’s one
opponent reasoned that guns have a neutralizing effect, making everyone
safer. Excellent logic. Violence really only tends to occur when people are
unarmed.

+ The state House may pass a bill allowing bars to stay open until 4 a.m.
Opponents of the bill cite fears of “violence and drunken behavior”. Are
those two extra hours more dangerous than kicking drunk people out of bars
at 2:01 a.m.? Seems like a trade-off.

+ D.C. sniper John Allen Muhamad was executed yesterday while friends and
family of the victims watched. The lesson we can learn: murder is sometimes
horrific and brutal, and other times it is “sobering”, “surreal”, and
comforting. That should clarify things for you in terms of morality and
mortality.

+ The editorial page cartoon warns that popping an Adderall will only cause
you to clean your house, not do your homework. Be sure to take two!

+ One letter to the editor points out that the “C-ya” chant not only has
homophobic slurs, but includes derogatory terms for women, too. And you
don’t hear us complaining! Carry on.

+ Vincent Patsy makes the controversial argument that complete socialism in
the USSR was a failure, which is a thought that has yet to be acknowledged
politically, academically or historically. At the end, he warns that the US
is moving toward complete socialism, and it’s just so obvious that he
didn’t need to provide specific evidence. This will be economically disastrous,
unlike capitalism (see: September 2008).

+ There’s an interesting viewpoint about the way bisexuality gets lost in
discussions about LGBT issues. It’s still expected that we’ll pick one or
the other–gay or straight–as if everything about humans is black or white
(skin color, height, intelligence, personality traits) and nobody falls in
the middle of the range, ever.

+ There’s some new movie about dying goats and brave men at war. Apparently
it’s satirical. I hope the lack of women in a movie about war in 2003 is
part of the joke.

+ Sports continue to be worthy of a page.

+ In typical American fashion, we’ve lost interest in space now that we
don’t have the USSR to compete with. Someone needs to challenge us so I can
live on the moon. Hey, China?

+ Former College Republicans chair Gordin Chaffin is finally realizing that
being anything besides a right-wing supernut right now basically makes him
a Democrat. Is he on our listserv yet?

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
