Yesterday, House Democrats started discussing a nonbinding resolution that if passed would express Congress’s disapproval of Bush’s strategy in Iraq.

I definitely think that this resolution is a step in the right direction and am encouraged by the fact that some Republicans will vote for it, even if it is just political maneuvering. Also like the House Democrats, I do want express my support for the troops that are already there, because not to support them after they have been placed there, regardless of the reasoning behind it, would just add to the tragedy that has occurred. However, I am inclined to think that more than just the passing of a nonbinding resolution needs to be done. I think Congress, as the representative body of the nation, needs to do more to show that its and the people of this country’s disapproval of the situation is stronger than the mere words of a nonbinding resolution. In regards to what form this action should take, I am not entirely sure. I don’t know if the best path would be for Congress to take more control of the war and demand a deadline or series of deadlines for troop withdrawal. I am not sure if voting against the funding for additional troops that the president seems determined to send to Iraq would be completely constructive, although I think it might be what we should do. I implore people to start thinking about this if they haven’t already, because it is quite obvious that the Iraq issue is not going away. Knowing this, the way that Democrats who are now in charge of Congress handle it might determine the results of the coming election in 2008. What are your varying opinions out there? I would like to know.
