Yesterday, House Democrats started discussing a nonbinding resolution that if passed would express Congress’s disapproval of Bush’s strategy in Iraq.

I definitely think that this resolution is a step in the right direction and am encouraged by the fact that some Republicans will vote for it, even if it is just political maneuvering. Also like the House Democrats, I do want express my support for the troops that are already there, because not to support them after they have been placed there, regardless of the reasoning behind it, would just add to the tragedy that has occurred. However, I am inclined to think that more than just the passing of a nonbinding resolution needs to be done. I think Congress, as the representative body of the nation, needs to do more to show that its and the people of this country’s disapproval of the situation is stronger than the mere words of a nonbinding resolution. In regards to what form this action should take, I am not entirely sure. I don’t know if the best path would be for Congress to take more control of the war and demand a deadline or series of deadlines for troop withdrawal. I am not sure if voting against the funding for additional troops that the president seems determined to send to Iraq would be completely constructive, although I think it might be what we should do. I implore people to start thinking about this if they haven’t already, because it is quite obvious that the Iraq issue is not going away. Knowing this, the way that Democrats who are now in charge of Congress handle it might determine the results of the coming election in 2008. What are your varying opinions out there? I would like to know.

12|Feb|2007 1Here’s what I know: Any Michigan Congressperson voting against this resolution is painting a big target on their own forehead.

13|Feb|2007 2I totally agree! Something really needs to be done, and something bigger and stronger
than words. Congress needs to show the US and the world for that matter that they are
trying their best to end this war! A simple non-binding resolution will not accomplish
that, all it does it say, “Okay, we don’t like what you’re doing so please stop.” I
also am not entirely sure what should be done, but I know that it has to be something
with more of an impact than a simple draft of written words.

17|Feb|2007 4[...] Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Besides lots of Dems and high-calorie food showing up at the UM Dems pancake breakfast this morning, some high points included “your 15th District U.S. Representative” John Dingell answering/rebutting a heckler who asked what he was doing about Iraq. JD said that he was against the war from the start and is doing what he can, etc., which made the heckler sound like a bit of a screamer. (You can see heckler’s musings here at UM Dems blog Kicking Ass [donkey] Ann Arbor.) [...]
A hardworking democrat
25|Feb|2007 5Mr. Hardy,
the event was not a “young dems” pancake festival for Dingell.
I resent that characterization. The event took a lot of hard work. It was the culmination and beginning of a lot of work for the COLLEGE democrats.
There were also a lot of local elected officials there and a lot of speech. Many people I talked to were delighted that these elected officials, including congressman Dingell, took time out of their busy schedules and actually talked with us.

17|Mar|2007 6You disagree why? Because they are not young? Because they are not really Democrats (actually you may have a point there)? Or because perhaps those round rubbery things we ate were not really pancakes?
Or is it because you are desperately trying to avoid the issue at hand, which is the illegal wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the simultaneous institution of a US policy of officially sanctioned murder, torture, and concentration camps holding in total, tens of thousands of interned civilians?
Do tell me oh “hardworking democrat” who lacks the integrity and intestinal fortitude to give your name, what is your policy on the murderous illegal war?
Should we continue to blindly “support” those who are trampling the constitution, raping, murdering, and pillaging in the name of, and with the tacit approval, of head-in-the-sand “democrats” like yourself?
Tell me also, do you believe in and support the right and responsibility of each citizen to engage in acts of public, non-violent protest and dissent over issues of public concern?
Do you support the constitutional right and authority of each citizen to publicly petition for the redress of grievances?
Or do you not care how many 15 year old girls are raped and murdered by US soldiers, how many mothers are raped in front of their daughters, how many innocent civilians are slaughtered by US bombs, how many innocent people are tormented by US-trained and funded torturers, as long as nobody interrupts your sacred pancake breakfast for three minutes to talk about it?
Shame on you!
