I just thought I would give you all an update about a riot at Michigan State University last night. You can read the full article at the Detroit Free Press… but here are some key excerpts. But first – a run down. Around 3,000 to 4,000 people were attending a massive party at an apartment complex called Cedar Village, which has hosted a Cedar Fest party in the past… Cedar Fest was banned in 1987 by the East Lansing City Council due to its riotous tendencies. After a couple of revelers were cited with MIPs last night the crowd turned ugly and the policy responded in due force.

“I don’t know what we could have done different to avoid it. When 4,000 people suddenly decide that they want to take the streets, it’s pretty hard for 50 police officers to stop them,” he said during a news conference at East Lansing City Hall this morning.

The area still smelled like beer.

“‘We want tear gas! ‘We want tear gas’” Ashley Pixley , 21,recalled people chanting. Pixley, a Lansing Community College student, lives on campus with her fiance.
After warnings to disperse and after being pelted with volleys of beer bottles the police obliged the crowd’s request. The Police Chief recalled…

“We’re going to solve this without a drop of tear gas,” he said.

Minutes later, Wibert was proved wrong. The warning to disperse, broadcast by a loudspeaker in the back of a truck, only caused a few to leave. The “flash bang” grenades, which flash, make a loud bang and emit a billowing cloud of smoke, didn’t work either.

The order for tear gas was given shortly thereafter.

As he stood at a police line on Bogue Street, choking back tears from the gas, Wibert simply said, “Well, we tried.

Update… Video… This seems to be a fan made video of the riot.
